Mechanical engineers research, manufacture, design, develop and test mechanical devices, such as engines, tools, and power using and power producing machines. Some of the power-producing machines they work on include gas and steam turbines, internal combustion engines, and electric generators. Power using machines include industrial production robots and equipment, air-cooling equipment, escalators and elevators, refrigerators, material handling systems, and machine tools. Mechanical engineers use computers and computer aided design and manufacturing programs in most aspects of their job. Mechanical engineers work in a broad assortment of industries, although their work function varies by industry. Mechanical engineers work in the manufacturing, technical, scientific, engineering, and architectural services sector or employed by the federal, local and state governments. Some are self-employed and work for various firms as consultants or are managers or administrators.
