Online Programs in Software Engineering

Computers and information technology is a rapidly growing field resulting in the need to incorporate new technologies and develop and design advanced computer software systems. Software engineers apply techniques and principles of computer engineering, science, and mathematical analysis in order to design and develop new systems and software. They evaluate and test these to enable computers to perform the applications required. Software engineers are often involved in network distribution, operating systems software, and compilers to convert computer execution programs. They solve technical problems, instruct the computer on function performance, and develop new software systems to keep up with new and advancing technologies and specializations. Computer programmers use the knowledge and principles of computer engineering, science, and mathematical analysis for evaluating, developing, designing, and testing computer systems and software necessary for various applications and to analyze and meet the user's needs. They solve technical problems, develop algorithms, and analyze programming problems. Software engineers coordinate the maintenance and construction of corporation's computer systems including taking the companies predicted growth into consideration. Working with the organization to meet its needs, a software engineer suggests and coordinates the requirements of each department such as, payroll recordkeeping, billing, inventory, ordering including networking or linking various departments computers to improve communication within the company. Many software engineers' work on teams comprised of manufacturing, marketing, design, and engineering people that design new software, new hardware, and new systems.

Many computer systems or applications software engineers find employment in computer systems design and work in industries such as, government agencies, software publishers, or manufacture's of related electronic equipment and computers. Some software engineers are self-employed, work as independent consultants, or work on a contract or temporary basis while others work for corporations that specialize in maintaining or developing client companies' intranets or web sites.

The job outlook for software engineers is extremely favorable as their employment rate is increasing faster than average for other jobs and they predict this trend to continue through 2014. Graduates with a degree in software engineering and strong business, interpersonal, systems analysis, and programming skills are always in demand by organizations and businesses that seek new technologies and efficient computer systems. Consulting opportunities also continue to increase as companies require more complex and sophisticated security, complex computer systems, and help with resolving problems and customizing their software programs. New job openings for software engineers will result from engineers reaching retirement age, accepting management positions, or changing occupations.
